About the Lord Mayor
Councillor Chauhdry Abdul Rashid J.P was born in a small village called Kund Shergarh (Mandi), Dadyal, District Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, on 7th January 1941. He is the eldest of his brothers and sisters. He attended Ratta Middle School, four miles from his village. He left school at thirteen in 1954. He entered the U.K on 7th November 1955. He lived in workington Cumbria in the Lake District for seven and a half years.
He started his working life as a market trader in the Lake District and studied part time at the local Workington College of Further Education. He returned to Pakistan in May 1962 for during which he met and married Shafait. In August 1963 he came to live in Birmingham on Victoria Rd, Aston and worked at a engineering firm George H. Hughes as a supervisor for 10 years and as a technical clerk in the drawing office of the same firm for two years.
In 1975 he bought a shop on Green Lane, Small Heath but found that it was a bad time for small businesses and gave up two years later. He then worked at I.M.I Witten for two years and later moved to work for British Leyland in Tysley, where he worked for three and a half years until 1982, when he decided to take voluntary redundancy and study full time in further education.
In 1980 he had been appointed by the Birmingham City Council to serve on East Birmingham Community Health Council.
In 1982 he was appointed to serve on East Birmingham Health Authority until 1985 during this time he also served on small heath Community Law Centre where he was Chairman of the Law Centre for a couple of years.
In 1982 he completed a Liberal Studies Course at Fircroft College and then went on to study for a Social Science Degree at Wolverhampton University (polytechnic then). He was also appointed a Justice of Peace.
In 1984 he joined the local government list of candidates and tried every year to be selected to fight an election. Eventually he had the chance and fought a successful election in May 1987 a month before his BA finals. To this day he does not understand how he managed to get his degree - instead of concentrating on completing his degree course, he almost blew the chance by trying to get elected at the same time.
In 1988 he joined Dudley Council as a Community Social Worker/Liaison Officer for Central Dudley until 2000.
In Dudley he spent twelve years with Dudley Local Authority and a further four years as a non-executive director at Dudley Family Health Services Authority. He also served on the Black Country Talking Newspaper, Dudley Council of Faiths and Dudley One World.
In 2000 he took early retirement from Local Government Service due to health problems - leukaemia and three angina attacks.
Since 2002 he is a Board Member of Birmingham Family Housing Association and a Board Member of St.Peters (Saltley) Housing Association and a Governor of Matthew Boulton College and Governor of Regents Park Primary School. In fact, he has served on many school and college Governing Bodies since 1980.
In 2003 he was offered a part-time job with Dudley Muslim Association (a voluntary organisation). Despite becoming an OAP in 2006 is still working as a senior community development officer for the same organisation.
Chauhdry Rashid is a family man and is very proud of living in Birmingham, a truly cosmopolitan City. He considers it a great honour to be able to serve as a Lord Mayor Of Birmingham and wants to do his very best to promote Birmingham throughout the global village. Most importantly, he wants to be remembered as a symbol of peace, unity and harmony in our multi-cultural, multi-faith and multi-racial city.
